Los Angeles, 1939. Private detective Philip Marlowe is restless and lonely as always – his job goes by slowly. That is until a new client arrives: the young, beautiful and expensively dressed Clare Cavedish, daughter of Hollywood actress and film icon Dorothy Quincannon (Jessica Lange), who wants Marlow to find her former lover, a small-time drug dealer known as Nico Peterson. Marlowe's investigation takes him to a club known as a haven for the rich and powerful of Los Angeles, run by Floyd Hanson, seemingly a pillar of society, but actually the gatekeeper of the sleazy underworld. As the story of Nico's accidental death unfolds, Marlowe is not convinced. The death turns out to be staged - Nico is still alive - and Marlowe soon finds himself drawn into the scandalous underworld of the film industry, and a crossfire between a legendary Hollywood actress and her subversive, ambitious daughter.
