INTERVIEW: Radoslav Zelenović, director of the European Film Festival Palić

The 20 jubilee festival has been opened. How does it feel after all these years?
You have to feel good when something you've put a lot of effort in, in difficult circumstances lasts for two decades. Even a little longer. The Zero Festival, as we call it, took place in 1992, and when we were hoping that many of the problems were behind us, the festival failed to be held in 1996 because there were no funds. Time has shown that the lack of funds and also the lack of understanding of what we wanted with the Festival were always present. In absence. A calmer period came when the agreement on funding was signed between the Republic of Serbia, Vojvodina and the City of Subotica, which resulted in the fact that in 2008 we had 400.000 Euros available for the Festival. Since 2009 the means have been reducing, and the Festival remains in its dimensions when it comes to the number of films and guests. It does not seem logical but that is how it is. To what extent is this feasible best knows Blažo Perović and his associates. I have been cooperating with him since 1992, and we are the only ones to implement all 19 Festivals. We contributed to this year's festival as well. We are a kind of "veterans" of the Palić

Addressing the full audience, Kusturica pointed that since the beginning of informational revolution, about twenty years ago, nothing important has happened. „What ever you do, you have to have a good idea. The problem is that good ideas usually mean European cinema and the best European films recently came from Iran. That's the benefit of festivals that especially care about author's films that cover whole specter of existential, political and historical problems, which characterize good films. As I deeply believe that in order to make global hit, you mustn't be smart. That's why festivals like this one became safe houses for good films“, said Kusturica.
