32nd European Film Festival Palić – Day 5

Screenings of "Echoes of the Plains" by Maja Uzelac and "Out of Control" by Anne Le Ny at the Closing of the European Film Festival Palić

On the final day of the festival, Wednesday, July 23, the documentary “Echoes of the Plains” by Maja Uzelac will be screened out of competition at 9 p.m. on the Summer Stage in Palić, as part of the Official Selection, followed by Anne Le Ny’s “Out of Control” at 11 p.m.

“Echoes of the Plains” is a journey through people, time, and landscapes – across the Vojvodina plains, deserted farmsteads, Hungarian estates, and cities connected to Zvonko Bogdan: Sombor, Subotica, Novi Sad, and Belgrade. Gradually and unexpectedly, the film moves through Bogdan’s songs and the era now surviving only within them. It portrays a vanishing age, defined by rituals captured in his music as symbols of the region’s iconography, bohemianism, and a slow-paced life being swept-away by modern times.

“Out of Control” follows Julien and Marie, who have enjoyed 15 years of seemingly stable marriage until Anaëlle, Julien’s childhood flame, returns. Her sudden presence awakens old insecurities in Marie, who begins to doubt Julien’s devotion and question her own self-worth. Amidst this emotional storm, Marie is drawn to Thomas, a charismatic stranger who offers her the validation she craves.

The Parallels and Encounters competition program features “The Black Hole” by Moonika Siimets at 6 p.m. and “Broken Voices” by Ondřej Provazník at 8 p.m., both screening at the Abazija Cinema.

In “The Black Hole”, residents of an apartment block district long for a better life, but when a black hole mysteriously appears in a lilac bush, they have to face aliens, a giant spider, and an Austrian in breeches.

“Broken Voices” is set in the early 1990s Czech Republic, where 13-year-old Karolína earns a place in a world-famous girls’ choir, joining her older sister and other driven young talents. Her voice soon catches the attention of the admired and enigmatic choirmaster, Machá. Being singled out feels like a triumph, until she begins to understand the unsettling price of that privilege. Inspired by the Bambini di Praga case, the film explores the fragile line where innocence collides with abusive power.

In the New Hungarian Film section, “Uncle Vanya – Bubble Waltz” by Péter Fazakas will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Eurocinema in Subotica. This free-form adaptation of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya follows Iván, long disillusioned with life and resigned, who breeds grey cattle on a remote estate. His usual calm is completely shaken when his narcissistic brother-in-law Jakab and Jakab’s new wife, the beautiful Léna, arrive.

The Eco Dox program features “The Faint Clatter of Birds” by Franciszek Berbeka at 5 p.m. at the Lifka Art Cinema in Subotica. The film follows a pioneer of Polish nature film embarking on his final journey. The protagonist, passionately in love with nature, has documented its beauty for nearly half a century. His heritage includes thousands of meters of film reels. The documentary portrays the remarkable passion of Włodzimierz Puchalski and the price he had to pay for pursuing it.

In the New European Documentary Film program, “A Year of Endless Days” by Renata Lučić will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Lifka Art Cinema. It follows the film’s director on a visit to her father, who lives in rural Croatia. Her birthplace is a mostly abandoned village with loads of beauty, but very little to offer. It is also a place she gladly abandoned as soon as she turned 18. Her father Tomo and his best friend Joso stayed there. They were both left by their wives, who went to Austria and Germany. The two men live alone and hang out on a regular basis. Renata interrupts their daily routine. Worried over her father’s loneliness, she is trying to get to know and understand him better, as well as comprehend why her family fell apart.

At 5 p.m. at the Eurocinema in Subotica, the EFA Shorts section features “2720” by Basil da Cunha, “Clamor” by Salomé Da Souza, “The Exploding Girl” by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, “The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent” by Nebojša Slijepčević, and “Wander to Wonder” by Nina Gantz.

The Special Screenings program presents shorts from the Tender Realities program: “Sentimental Education” by Alma Buhagiar, “In the Name of Good” by Anca Toma, “Venus” by Carina-Gabriela Dașoveanu, “Blue” by Ana Vijdea, and “Truth or Dare” by Simona Borcea, screening at 5 p.m. at the Abazija Cinema.

Created as part of the Erasmus+ program Breaking Taboos, a film of the same title will be screened at 7 p.m. at the "Mira Banjac" Hall at the Abazija Cinema.

Also at Abazija Cinema, at 10 p.m., audiences will have the opportunity to watch "Magical Land," one of the final films by Milorad Milinković. In this way, the festival pays tribute to the recently deceased director by both opening and closing with his works.

As part of the accompanying program, an ecological panel discussion titled "From Local to Global – The Contribution of Civil Society in the Fight Against Climate Change" will be held at 10 a.m. at the Eco Center, as part of the project Be Aware of the Problem – Be Part of the Solution, supported by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A IPA Hungary-Serbia program. At the same location, at 4:30 p.m., a panel will be held as part of the Green Charter for Film Festival program, exploring ways to reduce waste and pollution in the film industry.

Tickets for the Official Selection program are priced at 300 dinars for a one-day pass covering two films. They can be purchased at the Summer Stage box office starting at 8:00 p.m. In case of bad weather, films from the competition program will be shown at the Eurocinema (Open University of Subotica, 15 Tzar Jovan Nenad Square) at the scheduled times.

Tickets for the Parallels and Encounters program are 200 dinars for two films and can be purchased at the Abazija Cinema box office in Palić half an hour before the screening starts.

Admission to all other festival screenings is free!
